CELEBRATE 85 YEARS AND BEYOND!

Join us in celebrating the luminaires in our area that are turning 85 years old or older! We will enjoy cake and ice cream, highlight each of our birthday participants and of course sing “Happy Birthday!” We are asking each birthday celebrant to submit a personal history form as well as two pictures (one from childhood and one as an adult, all pictures must be labeled and will be returned immediately after office staff scans). If you have filled out a personal history form for this event in previous years, you can request that the pictures and information be reused when obtaining your ticket. Please submit history form and pictures to the City of Novi Older Adult Services Office by August 6. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance.

ALL THINGS YARN – KNITTING/ CROCHETING CIRCLE

Come join us for an afternoon of relaxation, inspiration and socialization. Work on your own special projects or help with some community projects (yarn and patterns will be provided for those who request). Projects include blankets, mittens and hats for the homeless and small items to raise funds to help cancer patients.

Joining a knitting/crocheting group is one of the best things you can do for yourself. If you’re new, it’s a great way to pick up new tricks and always have someone at the ready to help you through difficult parts of patterns or explain a new-to-you technique. “NOVI NEEDLERS” QUILTING GROUP

Give back to the community by joining sewers and non-sewers who create beautiful quilts that put smiles on the faces of those less fortunate. Over the past 16 years, thousands of quilts have been donated to various charitable agencies. Novi Needlers meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. NEW - CANASTA

Canasta became the most popular card-game in the 1950’s and has continued to be a card-players favorite since. Canasta, a game in the Rummy family, can be played in many variations. Come to play or learn how to play and bring back all those fond memories of the past. You must bring a partner (you don’t necessarily have to play as partners, but an even amount of people is required to play.) Group meets the last Friday of every month.

MAH JONGG

American Mahjong is a game that is similar to the card game Gin Rummy, but is instead played with tiles. It is based on the Chinese game Mah Jongg and has been around since 1937. The game can be played with three to four players per table. Come enjoy this extremely popular game. No Mah Jongg May 25.

NEW - KEEP ROLLING

Novi Parks is excited to partner with Performance Bicycle of Novi to give everyone (all ages welcome) a chance to ride with a group. Group rides encourage consistent exercise by connecting riders and adding the social aspects of outdoor fun. This is a beginners group that rides at a leisurely pace with a “No Rider Left Behind” commitment. Morning rides are available every Saturday and travel approximately 10 miles. Go to meetup.com and search for “Performance Bicycle Great Ride Series: Novi” for updates on these group rides. In addition Novi Older Adult Services would like to establish a biking group for cyclists age 50 and up. Please call 248.347.0414 if you are interested.

NOVI WALKING PROGRAM

Can you really walk your way to fitness? with the Novi Walking program where you’ll meet new people and have fun. Program is FREE! The benefits of regular brisk walking include maintaining a healthy weight, strengthening your bones and lifting your mood. Walkers set their own pace. Walks average 45-60 minutes. Massage therapy is particularly valuable for the aches and pains associated with growing older, so more individuals are turning to massage to relieve the pain of arthritis, help with recovery from surgery and maintain flexibility and fitness. HEARING EXAMS

Do many people seem to mumble or do not speak clearly? Do you find yourself avoiding social activities for fear you’ll have trouble understanding others? Take the first step to stay in the conversation. David Wizgird from “Hear Clear” will be at the Meadowbrook Activity Center to give complete hearing exams by appointment. NEW – EASY FOLK GUITAR

Learn easy guitar and traditional folk songs and discover yourself through song! This course is designed to teach basic folk guitar; which is NO note reading. Simple strumming will be taught. Within eight weeks you will learn how to play along while singing simple folk tunes such as: “You are my Sunshine,” “Down in the Valley,” “So Long, It’s Been Good to Know You,” and even a few songs from the 60’s including a selection of hits from the Beatles.

Part of folk guitar is singing - in fact, the most important part. So even if you think you can’t sing; or are hesitant about singing but have always desired to play the guitar, spend time with us and discover yourself through song. Beginners welcome. Bring an acoustic or classical guitar to class. We encourage you to borrow or rent one until you get more comfortable with your new hobby. NEW - WRITING FROM MEMORY

If you can tell a story you can write a story! And older adults have many stories to share. Writing from imagination and memory does not require experience or a college degree – it just requires a willingness to participate in a friendly group where stories abound. Group will meet every Tuesday for six weeks to cover a variety of memory writing skills and topics. Participants will have a chance to share and critique their stories.

This class is about getting your stories on paper and will not cover grammar, spelling or punctuation. All you need is a notebook and pen or pencil. (Laptops are also welcome)

NEW - CREATING CONFIDENT CAREGIVERS (CCC)™ TRAINING

The Creating Confident Caregivers (CCC)™ training program is designed for family members living with or providing primary care to a spouse, parent, relative or significant other who is experiencing memory loss, dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease and living at home. The CCC™ training program has been proven to reduce caregiver stress by providing caregivers with useful tools and information. The CCC™ program is not a support group, but an opportunity to learn new information and strategies that will make the job of caregiving easier and more rewarding. Caregivers will learn about the progression of the disease, how it impacts their loved one, learn strategies to manage difficult behaviors and the importance of taking care of themselves.

The CCC ™ trainings are held for two hours, once a week for six weeks. Respite care will also be available to participants free of charge. All materials, flyers, and training books are provided by the AAA 1-B, and there is no cost for the caregiver to attend this training. The class is limited to 12 participants. Up to three members from one family can attend a training together. Caregivers should plan to attend all six sessions to get the full benefit from the program.

Diabetes Personal Action Toward Health (PATH) provides skills and tools needed by people living with type 2 diabetes to improve their health and manage their symptoms. This workshop is a fun, interactive way for learning to manage your diabetes. Some of the best tips you learn are from each other! Free “Living a Healthy Life” book and relaxation cd are included. This course is also recommended for those taking care of someone with diabetes. Class size is limited. These are a series of classes built on the previous class. TRANSPORTATION- LET US DO THE DRIVING!

The program provides a safe and secure mode of travel for you, allowing you to continue a healthy, active lifestyle. Novi residents age 55+ or physically challenged are eligible for this program. Transportation is available for medical appointments, shopping and trips with in City of Novi and a ten mile radius from the Novi Civic Center.

Reservations are required at least two days in advance. Remember the earlier you call for an appointment, the better your chance of getting the time you request. You can even schedule one year in advance. To schedule your appointment, call Novi Transportation at 248.735.5617 between 7am-4pm Monday-Friday. Service is closed May 25, July 3 and September 7. You can make appointments anytime day or night from your computer. E-mail your transportation request to noviseniortransportation@cityofnovi.org.

TRANSPORTATION PUNCH CARDS - YOUR BEST BET!

No need to carry cash! Purchase a pre-paid transportation punch card. This is a great gift idea for a family member or friend. Punch cards are non-refundable. Punch cards may be purchased from City of Novi Older Adult Services in the Novi Civic Center during regular business hours (Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm) and from the transportation drivers. Focus Hope Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides a free monthly food supplement for those who are 60 years of age or older and reside in Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw or Macomb counties. Income Eligibility: One person household $1,265 or less monthly and Two person household $1,705 or less monthly. HEARING LOSS D.A.T.A. GROUP – SUPPORT GROUP MEETING

Are you or a family member experiencing hearing loss? Join us for a new monthly support group convening for the purposes of Discussion, Awareness, and Technological Assistance for those with hearing loss. The goal of the support group is to enable people with hearing loss to learn coping strategies and know you are not alone. Learn to help yourself have improved communication and a healthier life. LOAN CLOSET

The durable medical equipment Loan Closet is located in the Novi Civic Center. Items such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs, bathing aids and protective garments are available for older adults in need. Items available change constantly, so it’s important that you call ahead to ensure that we have the item you need ready and waiting for you. Equipment donations to the Loan Closet are accepted based on need. Items must be new or gently used (clean and in very good condition) to be included in our Loan Closet. Please call 248.347.0414. “Traveling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a story teller.”– Ibn Battuta Group travel opportunities, offered through City of Novi’s Older Adult Services, will have participants discovering new places, meeting new people, and making lasting memories for stories to tell. For the first half hour of the Fair, six to eight travel agencies will showcase their sensational trips and answer questions. Afterwards, you’ll hear interactive presentations about upcoming travels with the opportunity to ask questions. Door prizes and refreshments offered.
