HOME WATCH

Thieves often target homes of citizens who are on vacation or otherwise gone for an extended period of time. In response to this unique factor, the Novi Police Department has developed and implemented the Home Watch Program. Novi residents can come to Police Headquarters, call 248-348-7100, or fill out an online form to arrange a Home Watch check.

HANDICAP PATROL

The Novi Police Department is looking for volunteers to help patrol the parking lots within the City of Novi to ensure handicapped parking spots are available for those who need them. Applicants must be at 21 years old, possess a valid Michigan driver’s license, pass a background check, and be able to calmy handle situations with an understanding of the rules and regulations of the programs. DRUG TAKE BACK PROGRAM

The Novi Police Department accepts unwanted prescription medications on a continuous basis. By creating a secure place to dispose of prescription medications, we will reduce the amount of unused and/or expired prescription medications from accidentally or intentionally being consumed by children, sold on the street or improperly disposed of in landfill or sewer systems which can negatively affect our environment. Citizens may turn in unwanted medications 24 hours a day by bringing them to the Novi Police Headquarters, located at 45125 Ten Mile Road. A person turning in prescription medications can remain anonymous, if they choose.

NOVI POLICE DEPARTMENT CPL CIVILIAN PISTOL SAFETY CLASS

This one day, MCOLES approved course fulfills the classroom and shooting requirements necessary for obtaining a Michigan Concealed Pistol License.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
• Personal hand gun (weapons will not be provided)
• 100 rounds of ammunition
• Safety Glasses
• Shooter’s earmuffs or ear plugs
• Pen or pencil
• Baseball Cap
• Loose comfortable clothing appropriate for range

HOME FIRE INSPECTIONS

The Novi Fire Department will provide a free courtesy Home Safety Inspection. Inspections provide an opportunity to educate the home owner or occupants about fire safe behavior and the need for adequate fire and life safety conditions inside and outside of the residence. The inspection will check each area of your home and offer fire safety tips and suggestions to safe guard your family from the threat of fire or other potential hazards. The inspection typically lasts between 20-30 minutes. At the conclusion of the inspection a copy of the findings will be given to the resident along with suggestions and recommendations on how to correct any hazard found during the inspection. This program is strictly voluntary, but if you participate there are many benefits to you and your family. The Novi Fire Department simply wishes to assist you in making your home fire safe and hazard free. CHILD CAR SEAT INSPECTIONS

The Novi Fire Department provides free Child Car Seat Safety Checks and Installations, Monday through Friday, by appointment. Limited night and weekend appointments are available. The Department has four Certified & Licensed Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff ready to provide the most updated information, a free check of your child seat and, if necessary, perform a complete child seat installation. Both technicians were recently certified through the State of Michigan Department of Community Health and the National Child Passenger Safety Board (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) after completing an intensive, 80-hour course.

Community members are asked to bring the following items to the inspection:

• Vehicles owner’s manual
• Car Seat owner’s manual
• And, if possible, the child who will be “properly secured” in safety seat.

FILE OF LIFE

The Novi Fire Department offers free File of Life envelopes in which you can place medical records in and affix to your refrigerator. This allows emergency response staff easy access to crucial information. To obtain a File of Life or for more information please contact the Novi Fire Department Shift Supervisor at 248.349.2162.

FIRE & FALL PREVENTION FOR OLDER ADULTS

In an effort to better protect and prepare our older adults, the Novi Fire Department offers a program aimed at reducing the threat of injury and fire to Novi’s residents. The Fire and Fall Prevention for Older Adults Program is designed to educate residents of the hazards within their own homes that could cause harm by leading to a fire or causing injury. Slips and falls are the main source of injury for older people in the home. Fire Department Inspection personnel will offer recommendations to ensure your health and safety. They will also check to in ensure the proper installation and maintenance of at least one smoke detector on every floor of the home. The Fire and Fall Prevention Program will be delivered to Novi residents through both group presentations and by making in-home visits upon their request. All classes below are taught by Certified Novi Firefighters and textbooks are included when necessary, comfortable clothing is recommended.

ADULT AND CHILD HEARTSAVER CPR

This is an American Heart Association course covering CPR and choking emergencies for adults and children. Students will receive a two year certification card upon successful completion of the course. Free for Novi residents. The class is offered the first Wednesday of the month. There are no refunds or transfer of funds for this course. There is minimum of 6 and maximum of twelve students per class. Participants must register at the front desk. HEARTSAVER CPR OR AED COURSES FOR BUSINESSES

These classes are designed for businesses that are in need of training their staff in CPR. Course offerings are Heartsaver Adult and Child CPR and Heartsaver AED. The class is approximately 3.5 hours long and instructed by certified Novi Firefighters. Students will receive a two year certification card upon successful completion of the course. FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING FOR BUSINESSES

Becoming familiar with fi re extinguishers and their use in the workplace may allow you to put out small fires before they spread which may prevent injury as well as save lives. BLS FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER FOR BUSINESSES

This American Heart Association course covers Adult, child and infant Basic Life Support Skills, (CPR, AED use, Bag Valve Mask use and Choking), for both one and two rescuers. The class is designed for businesses that are in need of training their staff in Basic Life Support and is approximately four hours in length. Students will receive a two year American Heart Association certification card upon completion of the course. There is no refund or transfer of funds.
