Below you’ll find a variety of fitness classes that vary from high-impact aerobic to gentle strength building. Each program includes ability and suggestions. These are suggestions; you’re encouraged to reference the ability icon to determine if the class may be right for you. Still not sure? Contact us to try one class free of charge. Level 1 Fitness AbilityBALANCE TRAINING

Feeling unsteady? Loss of balance often results in falling and bone fractures. This 30-minute workout is designed to build bone, strengthen core, pelvic and leg muscles while improving posture and balance. You’ll move from station to station doing fun and innovative exercises to keep you smiling and moving! Please note: Participants must be able to move to each station and get on and off the equipment without assistance.

“We don’t dance to make others like us, we dance to be ourselves, to create, express and communicate with others; to transform the “no” of the mind into “yes” of the body” Maria Fux Dancing For Healing is a life changing experience in which you will let your body talk and express inner emotions in a healthy way. This class is not how to dance or follow choreography. It focuses on allowing free expression, play, and creative body movement. No dancing experience required. A large scarf or hula hoop is required. Wear comfortable clothing.

Level 1 Fitness AbilityMORNING TONE AND STRETCH

Build lean muscle mass in all the major muscles of the body and improve bone density with the use of hand held weights. You’ll benefit by preventing and/or reversing osteoporosis. Another advantage is increased muscle mass equals a higher metabolism which will help you lose weight. You’ll also find your daily activities are much easier. Level 1 Fitness AbilitySTRETCH AND STRENGTH

Improve your stamina, strength and flexibility through this program! All exercises are adaptable so you can work at your own pace while doing low-impact aerobics, strength training and stretching, even from a chair. Classes run continuously except on scheduled holidays and instructor vacation. Bring hand-held weights if you have them and a water bottle. Wear tennis shoes and loose, comfortable clothing. Level 1 Fitness AbilityKEEP ON MOVIN’

Looking for improved circulation, strength, pain relief, range of motion, increased energy levels, alertness and an active way to keep your body moving - this class is for you! We can achieve these goals through the use of exercise balls and bands. All activities are challenge by choice. Most exercises are done seated in a chair, so this class is especially accommodating for those with bad knees, hips or other limitations. Participants will use resistance bands and light weights. Come have fun and maybe make a friend or two! No class on May 25, June 3, July 20 and 22. Ages: 50+

Level 2 Fitness AbilityTAI CHI

Tai Chi, sometimes referred to as “meditation in motion” is an ancient Chinese martial art consisting of a sequence of slow, graceful motions that relax and strengthen the mind, body, and spirit. Wu Style is a family art with a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Our instructor has taught locally at the Botsford Center for Health Improvement and University of Michigan-Dearborn. Tai Chi is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation. Participants learn at their own pace, no experience is needed. Class is intended for the more active adult.

Level 1 Fitness AbilityYOGA: BEGINNER/GENTLE

This program is suitable for the beginner, those with minimal experience and those returning or continuing with their yoga practice. This is designed as a slower paced class to introduce you to moving with your breath for you to experience increased flexibility, strength, balance and proper posture alignment. This program will help you to relieve stress and create a sense of internal and external balance (visit yogamacey.com). No previous yoga experience is required, you are welcome to participate as gently as you like as we will work together at your level of fitness and comfort. Level 1 Fitness Ability“NO SWEAT” LUNCHTIME WORKOUT

Get one of your daily 30 minutes of stretching and strengthening in on your lunch hour while improving your mood and reducing your stress level! You will head back to your work day more energized and flexible with less pain and/or stiffness. 3-5 # weights recommended. Please note a new format started in November has the classes running every two months, with registration the last Wednesday of every other month. Looking for a half hour break from the grind? Well here it is! Join the 30 minute yoga class focusing on gentle poses, stretching, breathing, and of course, relaxation. KARATE

Family Self Defense Center, has provided instruction in Isshinryu Karate since 1992, and was chosen “Top Five Isshinryu Dojo in the Country” by the Karate Hall of Fame for eight years. F.S.D.C., promotes a “family friendly” atmosphere for the study of traditional Isshinryu Karate, and Sport Weaponry. Founders of the school, Mr. Z, 7th, and Ms. Chris 6th degree, Black Belt Master Instructors, have been instructing for over 40 years. Both were chosen “Top Contributors” nationally for their instruction of Isshinryu Karate, as well “National Instructors of the Year” 5 years running. Mr. Z earned the title of “National Isshinryu Sensei of the Year” in 2013 and 2014. Ms. Chris has been inducted into the Midwest Women’s Martial Arts Hall of Fame. “SAMURAI” SPORT SWORD – SPORT WEAPONS TRAINING

Learn the fun of wielding a Japanese sword and other traditional martial arts weapons without any danger. The sport weapons program teaches eye-hand coordination, discipline and respect, while training in an encouraging, non-aggressive, fun environment for children and adults. Learn short, long and double sword, Bo staff, Escrima stick and Nunchukas all utilizing safe, padded weaponry. As students advance, new found skills will be tested in exciting games and drills with other classmates. Additional Information: Qualifying students will promote to their next Sash color at the end of the session, with a nominal $10 promotion fee paid directly to the instructor. NOVI WALKING PROGRAM

Can you really walk your way to fitness? You bet! Stay motivated by connecting with the Novi Walking program - meet new people and have fun. The benefits of regular brisk walking include maintaining a healthy weight, strengthening your bones and lifting your mood. Walkers set their own pace. All ages are welcome. Each class is designed to give the beginning paddler a solid foundation for enjoying their time on the water at Lakeshore Park! Advanced students are welcome to attend as an opportunity to practice their basic techniques. Classes are taught both on land and the water. The focus will be on boat/ board handling, water safety, and basic paddling techniques along with having fun! Participants will receive a “free” coupon to enjoy a two- hour canoes and/or kayaking trip, at the Heavner Canoe/Kayak Rental, on the Huron River in Milford, or Newburgh Lake in Livonia. This hands-on learning program gives young children their first riding lessons and introduction to ponies and horses in a safe environment with a professional instructor and a personal helper. In addition to riding, Tiny Tots will learn all about horses. After riders become independent they can move onto Tiny Tots 2 which is a more advanced program for small children. ADULT BEGINNER HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS

Looking to try a new and healthy activity? Riding could be the answer. Leg and core muscles are used to maintain balance and direct your horse. Each lesson will build on the last, as you increase your ability to maintain balance and control your horse at a walk and trot. Baseball

MLB PITCH, HIT & RUN

Pitch, Hit & Run™ is the official youth skills competition of Major League Baseball® for boys and girls. This free competition is an opportunity for young baseball and softball players to prove their ability to pitch, hit and run among the best in their age group. Participants will have the chance to advance through three rounds of competition and compete in the National Finals on an all-expense paid trip to the MLB All-Star Game in Cincinnati, Ohio. Finalists will compete on the field prior to shagging fly balls during the Home Run Derby and attend the All-Star Game. The road to Cincinnati starts here! Pre-registration is available at cityofnovi.org. Participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and have their parent/ guardian fill out a registration/waiver form before competing.

YOUTH BASEBALL/SOFTBALL LEAGUES

T-Ball, Coach Pitch, Fastpitch Softball Get your child involved in America’s pastime this summer! In leagues players will learn the fundamentals and basic rule comprehension of the sport. Beginner and experienced players are welcome.

Practices begin the week of June 15. Teams will have a combination of games and practices twice a week on weeknights. Each team has an eight game schedule through seven weeks.

A jersey, hat/visor, and participation award will be included. Players will need to provide their own glove and pants/shorts. Other basic equipment will be provided at the fields.

Please register your child for the grade they will be enrolled in for the 2015-2016 school year.

Coach Information: We need volunteer coaches! If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, please indicate so during the registration process. A mandatory coaches meeting will take place the week of June 1 and players will be contacted by their coach following the meeting. Coaches will receive $25 credit to their account for future use in any Novi Parks program.

LEISURE UNLIMITED YOUTH BASKETBALL

Jump into basketball this year! This program is the beginning or intermediate player. Kids will learn passing, dribbling, shooting and develop a better understanding of the game. We’ll cover strategy, offensive plays, defenses and player positions. Drills are fun and progressive. Scrimmages will be played during class time. Our emphasis is on effort, teamwork and sportsmanship. Wear tennis shoes and bring a water bottle. Experience the NEW High School 3 on 3 Basketball League in Novi! The league will feature a chance for high school students to form a team and dominate the court. NEW - METICULOUS BASKETBALL BEGINNER SKILLS TRAINING

Meticulous Basketball provides a simple yet developmental curriculum to help novice players learn basketball skill. Athletes will learn how to dribble, pass, and shoot in a non-competitive training environment. The training session will focus on form rather than results to encourage success through trial and error. Despite a low intensity approach to skill development, athletes will still be expected to give their best effort and attitude. The words “I can’t” will not be tolerated. The “Take Your First Shot” skill workouts are perfect for the athlete who is developing interest in the game of basketball.

The Meticulous Basketball Intermediate skill sessions are an intense yet comprehensive program designed to heighten fundamental skill. Athletes will develop the five pillars of basketball skill: dribbling, passing, shooting, moving without the ball, and catching. The training session will focus on form and speed. Sessions will include multiple breaks to encourage high effort during drills. The intermediate workouts will also include some competitive drills to measure skill under pressure. The intermediate workouts will benefit any basketball player participating in organized play.

Football - Flag

FALL NFL YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Are you ready for some football!? Novi Parks has partnered with Michigan Youth Flag Football, the largest youth flag football organization in the state, to bring this exciting and popular league to Novi residents. This league is for boys and girls from Pre-K through 8th grade.

Games are played at ITC Community Sports Park and Northville Community Park and will take place on Sunday afternoons beginning in September. Practices take place one hour prior to game time each week to ensure a convenient and fun experience for all. Participants will receive an NFL reversible jersey, flag belt, eight weeks of instruction, seven game season, background checked and trained coaches, and an individual participation award. Games are officiated by MHSAA referees. This is a 5v5, non-contact, recreational, co-ed format that is perfect for kids of all skill levels!

Golf

LEARN TO PLAY GOLF JUNIOR LESSONS

This class is geared toward junior golfers with an interest in the game of golf. The lessons will give them the skills to participate in other junior golf programs, along with outings and other recreational functions. The fundamentals will be covered including grip, aim, setup, full swing, chipping & putting, etiquette on the course, fitness, and education. Classes will be held in the morning three days a week. This is a new schedule and is limited to six students so that one-on-one time is maximized. Golf balls are included.

Hockey

HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Hockey Development Program (formerly known as Learn to Play Hockey) is a great way for kids aged 4-9 to learn the basic skills required to play the great game of hockey. All classes are taught by highly qualified hockey instructors and are one hour in length, one time per week.

NOVI YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

Novi Ice Arena is home to the Novi Youth Hockey Association. The NYHA is a nonprofit, volunteer led organization committed to cultivating and developing youths in the sport of ice hockey. Both house and travel teams are offered to support players ranging from ages 4-18. There are more than 500 players and coaches registered with the NYHA, making it one of the largest in Michigan and the USA. Over the years, NYHA teams have won state and district championships, along with numerous tournament wins. The hockey season runs from early August (travel)/late August (house) through March. The house teams (beginning with the Squirt division) and the travel teams participate within the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League (LCAHL), the nation’s largest amateur youth hockey league. The Mini-Mite and Mite house players compete against local teams.

Lacrosse

BOYS’ LACROSSE DEVELOPMENTAL LEAGUE

This seven-week league runs one day per week throughout the summer and focuses on player development. The first 30 minutes of each session will be instruction and skill development, followed by an hour of scrimmages and games. Skill development will include offense, defense, dodging, shooting, passing, ground balls, and many other skills. Lacrosse campers will be required to provide their own equipment, including lacrosse helmet and stick. Other equipment is recommended, but not required. All Lax players will be provided a reversible jersey/pinnie, helmet sticker, water bottle, and car sticker.

Stacey’s School of LAX skills and scrimmages sessions provide a fun environment to love and learn lacrosse! This clinic improves the girls’ fundamental skills of the game through drills and small-sided games. Stacey Tardich, President of Stacey’s School of LAX, has been playing and developing girls’ lacrosse for more than 20 years in Michigan. Players will be required to provide their own equipment, including stick, goggles, and mouth guard.

LEARN TO SKATE

Come be a part of one of the largest Learn to Skate programs in the country! Our program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Figure Skating program. Lessons are given by highly qualified professional skating instructors. All classes are 30 minutes with an additional 30 minutes of practice, and enrolled skaters will receive a Public Skate punch card for a limited number of free admissions. Soccer

TINY TIKES SOCCER

Novi Parks is introducing a new soccer program for 3 year old kids! Participants will play in 4 practices/games on Saturday mornings. Sessions will take place in a 45 minute time slot and games are in a 4v4 format. Jerseys and awards are included in the registration fee.

Players must be 3 years old as of April 14, 2015. Parents will facilitate the games and they will be allowed on the field to help the players. There will not be games on May 9 and May 23.

FALL RECREATIONAL HOUSE SOCCER LEAGUE

This instructional soccer league will focus on developing the basic fundamentals while providing a supportive and fun environment.  Your child will learn how to dribble, shoot, pass, goal tend, and more! Practices take place once during the week with games generally occurring on Saturdays; however, there may be some weekday games. When registering, please indicate at least two preferred practice nights. This does not guarantee that you will have practice on one of those nights, as schedules are made based on the availability of the volunteer coaches.

Preschool players must be 4 years old by Aug 24, 2015. Covered shin guards are mandatory for all participants and jewelry, including earrings, will not be allowed.

FALL TRAVEL SOCCER LEAGUE

Novi Parks Soccer Club THUNDER! High competition without the sky-high costs! The travel soccer league is governed by WSSL (Western Suburban Soccer League). Try-outs for the Select Division of WSSL travel soccer will be held on Saturday, June 13 at Wildlife Woods Park. There are no tryouts for our Recreational Travel Division teams and they are formed provided we have a coach and enough players..

Our travel club plays teams from surrounding communities at home and away locations on weekends and weekday evenings. When prompted during registration, individuals may put in their coach name, if returning. If an individual was not part of a team from the previous season, we will place them based on availability. Players will receive a full uniform including a home and away jersey, shorts and socks. Covered shin guards are mandatory for all participants and jewelry, including earrings, will not be allowed.

Tennis

YOUTH TENNIS LESSONS

Learn the sport of a lifetime! Students will be taught the fundamentals of how to hold the racquet, correct swing technique for all strokes and proper footwork. Plan to hit a lot of balls in this fast-paced class. Each session will include four dates with one and half hour lessons. Please bring a tennis racquet and water bottle.

NEW – ADULT 3 ON 3 BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Experience the NEW Adult 3 on 3 Basketball League in Novi! The league will feature a competitive atmosphere and a perfect opportunity to get your friends together to play basketball. Teams supply their own jerseys. Individuals will be placed on teams and will have the option to utilize Novi Parks jerseys or supply their own. Season includes: 7 nights of doubleheaders, 25 minute time limit, and an official will oversee the contest. The top two teams will play the eighth week for a shot at the championship!

Cricket Cup

NOVI CRICKET CUP

Compete and socialize with cricket enthusiasts! The 5th annual Novi Cricket Cup will be held at the beautiful Ella Mae Power Park. Tournament will be limited to the first 12 teams and modified ‘T-ball’ cricket rules will apply. Team rosters will be due at the managers meeting on August 14. Tournament schedule will be posted by Monday, August 17. The tournament will start Friday evening for some teams, and continue onto Saturday and Sunday. Some teams will have the opportunity to play under the lights. The top four teams will advance to knockout rounds on Sunday, August 23.

Golf

MENS GOLF BOOTCAMP

Instructor Larry Wardo, a PGA Professional at the Novi Oaks Golf Center, will provide individual attention to golfers of all skill levels. Bootcamp is designed to golfers from beginners to advance to improve their golf game. Compared to regular lessons there will be more direction given on swing mechanics by using drills and exercises to create more speed and accuracy in the golf course. This class has a limit of five students to maximize one-on-one instruction. Additional Information: Golf balls are included and Novi Oaks does have clubs to use at no cost.

The adult soccer league is back for another season. Our 8v8, 5-game Fall league will be played on Sunday afternoons beginning Sep. 6. Team are awarded with trophies based on standings at the end of the season.

Come join the tennis league that fits into any busy schedule! Fourteen matches are scheduled on a weekly basis with your opponent at a convenient time and location for both. Players will be assigned to the appropriate division based on their level of competitive play and leagues may be reassigned in the middle of the season to ensure equally competitive leagues. All players must submit their USTA rating, which can be determined through usta.com (professionally OR self-rated). Players must be 18 years old by May 18, 2015. A league banquet at the end of the season is included in the registration price. If you are interested in score keeping for your division, please make a note when registering. Division score keepers will be refunded their entry fee at the conclusion of the season.

CO-ED SAND VOLLEYBALL LEAGUES

Come work on your tan and while playing in the sand overlooking Walled Lake. Lakeshore Park has two newly renovated sand volleyball courts ready for action! All teams will be scheduled for 10 weeks of regular season games followed by tournament play. Wednesday will be a competitive league with high level players. Tuesday and Thursday will be recreational in nature. All players must be 18 years of age by June 2, 2015. A mandatory manager’s meeting will be held at Lakeshore Park the week of May 26. FIVB Official Sand Volleyball Rules will be in effect. All games will be officiated. $10 official fee must be paid in cash directly by teams before the start of each match. Season: Early Jun-Mid Aug

CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY OPEN HOUSE

Every year, the Ice Arena hosts an open house in appreciation of all of our customers. This year’s event will be on Wednesday, August 26, 2015. There will be free open skating, free sticks and pucks, a Try Hockey for Free clinic, and raffles, games, and vendor tables. Open registration for all fall programming will also be available. More information will be posted on the ice arena website in early August.

Open Skating is a great low-impact exercise and is fun for the entire family. We offer Open Skating sessions every day of the week as well as our special “Theme Skates” throughout the year. SKATING CLUB OF NOVI

Established in 1998 with 25 members, the Skating Club of Novi is a volunteer organization that has been a member of the United States Figure Skating Association since 1999. Since then, the club has grown to over 150 members. The club is dedicated to the promotion of figure skating, and supports many activities at the Novi Ice Arena to further this goal. The Skating Club hosts the Annual Ice Show in the early spring that showcases the talents of our Learn to Skate students as well as our recreational and competitive figure skaters. Our coaching staff is for all levels of skaters, from beginner to competitive; individual freestyle and dance. On May 10-11, the Skating Club of Novi is hosting their annual ice show. This year’s theme is “The 80’s”. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. Summer freestyle ice is available six days per week (Monday-Friday mornings and afternoons, and Saturday mornings). The Skating Club of Novi’s Ice Review is the annual figure skating show performed by members of the Skating Club and participants from our Learn to Skate program.

HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY

Novi Ice Arena is the home of the Novi High School Wildcats and the Northville High School Mustangs. We are also the home for the Novi Wild Prep team and the Northville Prep and Girls teams. We host many high school hockey games and events each year.
